I was approached by WayForward in early 2022 to create concept art for some of Contra: Operation Galuga's bosses.
My first assignment was a staple of past Contra games - the heart of an alien monstrosity with a partially developed chest cavity surrounding it being grown in a lab. This game's iteration of the boss includes an arm to attack players. The boss' visuals had to adhere to pre-established hitboxes.
My second assignment was a redesign of the first Contra's Spidal. My initial idea was to closely follow the original game's design, but we ended up taking it in a military sci-fi direction that I think looks really cool. As with the Alien Heart boss, there were pre-established hitboxes that the concept needed to fit within.
My third assignment was to create an initial iteration of the game's final boss, Java. It's not a coincidence that he looks like a Xenomorph in a lot of ways - I was given direction to give him that resemblance. A lot about the design was changed before the final in-game appearance, but I'm proud of my contribution to its development.
Art direction by Vincent Odien. It was an absolute pleasure working with the team at Wayforward.
